Before your Trip

The following documents are required for successful pick up of your vehicle:

  • Voucher (all necessary telephone numbers that may be needed in the case of an emergency are listed)
  • A valid credit card issued in the driver's name
  • A valid driver's license (in some cases an international driving license)
  • Passport
  • Recommendation: Find out about the local road traffic regulations (the Highway Code)

Please note the following points when renting a car

  • Please check first with your credit card company to see whether they offer CDW (Collision and Damage Waiver) protection in the event of an accident or damage to the rental car. You can then choose your rental car with the insurance package that best suits you and your existing coverage through your credit card.
  • Read the rental contract thoroughly
  • Check the rental vehicle for existing damage. If you notice any damage, it is important to insist that it is documented. Even if the local partner insists that the damage has already been registered, it is important to have a written documentation of the existing defects.
  • Check all the important functions of the rental car e.g. indicators or windscreen wipers. If you find a defect, make a complaint.
  • Make sure that the car contains all the necessary safety equipment which is required according to the local regulations. This includes equipment such as a spare wheel, a warning triangle, a reflective vest and a first aid kit.
  • Inform the station personnel when the car is handed over unproperly cleaned
  • Verfiy that the vehicle is supplied with all necesary safety equipment
  • Make sure the amount of gas in the tank is recorded in writing before you leave the pick-up station.
  • Allow all additional drivers to be registered
  • Only drive on regulated roads
  • Alert the station before attempting cross-border travel

What you should do in the case of an accident or damage

  • Notify the local rental company immediately.
  • If a third party is involved, contact the local police who will prepare a report.
  • When you return the vehicle, ensure that the car hire agency compiles a damage report that should be signed by both you and the local car hire company.  This report should be kept safe.
  • If the car is found damaged, the car rental company will charge your credit card for this amount, up to the limit of your deductible.

How to claim back your deductible in the event of an accident or damage

If you have purchased the Coverage without Deductive (Inclusive) Damage and Theft Waiver Coverage, you may be entitled to a refund of excess.

If you have purchased the Coverage with Refund of Deductible (Inclusive) package, you may be entitled to a refund of excess.

In order to begin the refund process, please send the following documents to CarDelMar:

  • The damage report signed by the local rental company and by you.
  •  The police report.
  • A copy of the rental contract.
  • Proof that the deposit was paid in cash or charged to your credit card e.g. a credit card statement showing that the card was debited.
  • A detailed evaluation of the damage.

The deposit/deductible shall not be refunded in the event of:

  • Damage due to failure to observe the general terms and conditions of rental, especially damage caused by driving on unmade roads.
  • Damage due to drunk-driving or gross negligence.
  • Loss of or damage to the car keys.
  • Damage to the tyres, wheels, mirrors or glass when one has not purchased Coverage with refund of Excess including Glass & Tyres (All-Inclusive Plus).
  • Damage to the roof or undercarriage.
  • Losses resulting from the theft of personal belongings left in the hire car
  • Damage to the clutch
  • All consequential losses resulting from such actions, e.g. vehicle recovery costs, hotel costs etc. and the loss of personal belongings

Returning your car rental

  • It is important that the rental vehicle is returned punctually to avoid any unnecessary costs.
  • Check your car for new damage. The condition of the car on return should be documented in writing.
  • Make sure you keep a copy of the report together with a copy of the rental contract.
