The harbor city of Hobart

Hobart is the small yet pleasant capital of the island Tasmania, which is situated to the southeast of the Australian mainland. Founded in 1804 by deported British criminals, it is, behind Sydney of course, the oldest settlement in Australia.

The town lies on the mouth of the Derwent River and curves around the foot of Mount Wellington, which with its 4,169 ft is Tasmania’s highest point and provides a stunning backdrop to the city.

The still functioning harbor is wonderfully picturesque and has lost none of its charm over the years. The harbour is a fitting reflection of the rest of the city, which despite its industriously hectic business life always provides time and opportunity for rest and relaxation in its bountiful quiet spots, such as the multitude of excellent restaurants and cafes lining the streets or the exquisite Royal Botanical Gardens.

Points of interest in the city include the Anglesea Barracks, on Davey Street, built to house the first “new arrivals”, and where it is possible to experience life under the horrors of the Nineteenth Century British penal system. The building, by the way the oldest still in existence in the entire Australian Continent, is still used, but now belongs to the Australian Military and can only be visited during the official visiting hours. Stretch your legs and get out of downtown

For those wishing to get out of the downtown hustle and bustle for a few hours, a visit to Mount Wellington and Wellington Park is a must. The mountain is the perfect place for walking, hiking and other outdoor activities. Exploration, whether on foot, by bike or rental vehicle is guaranteed relaxation, and naturally in good weather this is the best point from which to take in the spectacular views of Hobart and its many watercourses down below. The area is easily reached in under an hour by rental car from the city center, but for those feeling slightly less adventurous the lower, 1115 ft, rise of Mount Nelson in the south also provides good views of the city. Get your rental car to experience memorable vacation.

The best parts of downtown

The main attraction though would be the city center itself, consisting of lovingly restored sandstone buildings erected by the prison colony in the early 19th Century. The area known as Battery point contains some particularly impressive examples of colonial warehouses and living quarters, these days housing a number of wonderful art and craft galleries and boutiques, providing plenty of opportunity to find that perfect locally-made souvenir. Drive with your rental car and discover the landscape.

Our top recommendation is Salamanca Place, an eclectic mixture of beautiful architecture, museums, unique art stores and excellent dining, with a gorgeous view over the Derwent. Venture there in the evening and your delicious freshly caught fish will be complimented free-of-charge by an explosion of colors as the river lights up with the fiery shades of the setting sun. This experience is not to be missed! With your car rental, enjoy your freedom.

Be enchanted by the view while driving your rental car.
A good point to remember is the food and arts market that takes over Salamanca place on a Saturday morning, an event seemingly attended by the entire town, perhaps not to buy, just to see and be seen.
Should you have enough of Salamanca place, the restaurants in North Hobart, northwest of Battery point are renowned for their excellent international menus.
