Exploring France in your rental car
Exploring France by car is probably the most exciting way, as you will be able to see all the major sights and cities, you can independently create your own itinerary and take a detour when you feel like it. Beware though, that with bad preparation your vacation can turn into a very costly journey.
Highways in France are subject to fees, which are collected at certain intermission points on the highway. If you cannot plan your route around this (by taking smaller country roads) make sure you have your credit card ready. Local book shops and gas stations sell maps and guides, making it easier to plan to circumnavigate the highway fee in your rental car.
Breaking the speed limit is a serious offence in France and you will be charged horrendous fees if you get caught. In towns the limit is 50 kmph (30 mph), on country roads 90 kmph (54 mph) and on highways 130 kmph (78 mph). In residential areas and close to schools you will often find so-called sleeping policemen, speed bumps that ensure you don’t exceed the allowed speed. All those measures and the strict handling of traffic offenders have resulted in the French being quite responsible and calm drivers. For this reason you should be extra careful when driving your rental car in France.

Paris and the surroundings have an excellent network of highways, and during July and August, when Paris is crowded with tourists, the administration puts extra effort in providing sufficient and free parking space for visitors. The roads along the coast and in small tourist towns, on the other hand, tend to get jammed during the summer. All highways in a Paris direction lead to the Peripherique, the city highway, which is best avoided during rush hour. Remember that the ROW rule is right before left.
The road network in France is generally excellent and traffic volume relatively low. With proper preparation you can even explore the entire country without having to use expensive highways, though you don’t always have to stick to country roads. If there is no alternative road the respective highway section will be free of charge. If you do have to opt for a Route Nationale, a country road, beware of the speed traps that take thousands of expensive holiday snapshots every year.
Top destinations to drive to in your rental car:
A great region to drive through is Champagne, a particularly charming province with classic French vine fields and beautiful scenery between Epernay and Sezanne. If possible stop at a winery and sample a few sips of the fanciest drink in the world. Mind the alcohol limit when driving, though.
Another highlight on a round trip is Mont Ventoux in Provence, a popular destination especially for those traveling in caravans. The peak is best reached from Malaucène, Sault, or Bédoin. Here the journey truly is the reward; the view of the Alps and the snow-covered Pyrenees is simply breathtaking, and in clear weather you can look all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.
The biggest greenhouse in the world is located in Nice, a Mediterranean city with a strong Italian influence. Almost 20 acres of exotic plants attract thousands of visitors every year, as does the city itself with an exciting mix of different cultures, languages, and styles. And if you’re done lying on the beach you can just jump back into your car and head on. Don’t forget to take a quick pit stop at the famous flower park west of Nice before you go back on the road.
