Dax is a picturesque, slow-paced, small town in the Landes Département in the south west of France. Tourists have always been a part of this town, thanks to the nice weather and the thermal springs, which the Romans already enjoyed very much. These days a modern spa has replaced the ancient establishments and entertainment facilities ensure that the entire family will have a good time. Be an independent traveler thanks to your rental car.
Since body and mind both need nurturing, Dax has a number of excellent museums. The Musée de Georgette-Dupouy displays contemporary art, and the Musée de jean Charles de Borda informs the visitor about the town’s history and the many relics you will find scattered about on a walk around the area.
One of those ancient relics is the tradition of bull chasing in late summer, a popular event in all of southern France. The old L’Atrium still has theater, dance, and music on the program, and strolling down the downtown promenade you will pass ancient Roman relics as much as young artists showing off their skills. The old arena still holds the traditional bull fights, an event only fit for strong stomachs. If you don’t have one, you’ll still find plenty of places where you can spend an entertaining evening, as the town has a number of great bars, discotheques, and restaurants. Get your rental car to experience memorable vacation.
Regional dishes mainly consists of fresh fruits of the sea, ham, and cheese, but leave some room for the delicious deserts like sweet Pastis Landais. A major element of the local cuisine is, as is anywhere in France, wine. The regional wineries are just outside Dax in and around Eugénie les-Bains in the east and south of Salies-de-Béarn. Visitors are always welcome to sample the wine, and a rental car allows you to take a tour of the best vineyards in the area. Drive with your car rental and discover the landscape.
Should you decide to go to Salies-de-Béarn you have the chance to go on a hike in the Saint Étienne-d´Orthe natural reserve that preserves rare animals and plants, or go to one of numerous castles and stately homes. A lot of these were built during the Hundred Year War, which is why some are French and some are English: the area changed hands as many times as a 10 centime coin. With your car rental, enjoy your freedom.
The old fortifications of Monfort-en-Chalosse make for another great day trip. Archeological findings prove the early settlement of the extremely fertile area, and the local history museum does a great job of telling the town’s story. A Gothic church forms the center of this tranquil little place. Book your car rental and discover the area.
After a few exhausting days of exploring the environment you might want to hit the beach. Just a few miles and a half hour ride south on the N124 highway and you get to the fantastic Atlantic Ocean beaches. If you want to safe the highway fee, stick to the smaller country roads. They take a little longer, but are also more scenic. For slightly quieter beaches go north to Leon and follow the streams to the sea. If you have time and a sense for adventure you can also rent a boat and take one of the waterways to go to the Atlantic.
Be enchanted by the view while driving your rental car.
