Enjoy classic architecture from the Renaissance
Stretching over 130 meters, the gothic
Basilika Saint-Quen contains one of the largest organs built by Aristide Cavaillé-Colls. This organ represents one of the last instruments constructed by
Aristide Cavaillé-Colls. 80 original stained glass windows decorate the Church’s three levels. The inside of the church is very welcoming with its grandiose architecture and excellent light exposure. The gothic cathedral inspired the painter Claude Monet and his cycle of paintings. Another attraction worth seeing is the massive astronomical clock from the 14 century.
The city’s oldest preserved Renaissance building harbors the city’s tourist office. Built in the early 16th century, this building boasts typical markings from a building out of the Renaissance.
The
Place de Vieux Marché, obtained its depressing fame from the burning of the French martyr
Jeanne d’Arc. A church resides at this location that honors the French saint. A highly recommended tour is the ‘Tour Jeanne d’Arc’ in which you will view the ruins of a castle built in 1200. It was in this castle that Jeanne d’Arc was interrogated by the court. You can easily reach the castle in your rental car.
Saint-Maclou
Held as a jewel of the city, the church of
Saint-Maclou displays the outstanding gothic architecture of its time. In this church you will come across a grand entrance out of the renaissance period.
The city also has a cemetery that is the resting place of nearly ¾ of the city’s population that died during the black plague. This area is now home to the art school. On your way into the building be sure to take a look at the cabinet where a cat skeleton is being displayed that was found in a wall. For those who prefer a little more entertainment should visit the annual worldwide motorboat race that starts around May 1st.
