Taking your rental car through Italy
Just like in
France you will have to expect to be charged a fee on Italian highways. Apart from sticking to the speed limit (50 kmph = 30 mph in towns, 90 kmph = 54 mph on country roads, 110 kmph = 66 mph on highways) you are required to turn on your lights outside the city even during the day.
Italy is fun and easy to explore by rental car. Especially northern Italy seems to be made for this kind of trip. The scenery in this region is extraordinarily diverse, ranging from snow-covered Alps to pearly-white Riviera beaches. The architecture takes its cues from the late Middle Ages and renaissance, the best examples being Verona, Mantua, Bergamo, and Venice. Exploring Italy independantly in your rental car is an unforgettable experience.
Diverse Regions
One of the most beautiful towns in all of Europe is
Turin in the Piemont region. For centuries it was the capitol of the Savoy empire and for a while that of the unified Italy. The precious collection of the Savioa family is to be found in the Egyptian Museum, the royal weapons chamber, and in the art gallery. The
Turin Cathedral has acquired worldwide fame, because it is home to the Shroud of Turin, which is believed to be the cloth Jesus Christ wore at the time of his burial. Take your rental car through this wonderful region and explore everything that it has to offer!
In the country around Turin you will find many old palaces and stately homes of the Savoia family, but also numerous nature reserves and national parks.
Central Italy is dominated by hilly countryside and mountain ranges. The second biggest Italian national park is located in the Abruzzi mountains, and Florence offers sophisticated cultural and historical entertainment.
Southern Italy is all about rough mountains and dense pine forests. Vesuvius is still active, and
Pompeii is eerie proof of the enormous force the volcano is capable of developing when erupting, though it has not caused this level of devastation in over 2000 years.
Along the Amalfi coast small towns have all the charm you would expect from an Italian fishing village in the sun. With a rental car you will be able to visit virtually everything in Italy!
Picturesque hillsides and large alpine lakes are what you find in the Lombardi region, especially popular among art lovers. The most gorgeous Italian churches, palaces, monuments, and villas attract more than just art history teachers, the mild climate and beautiful countryside are perfect for a family holiday.
Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake, is known around the world, and justly so. The region is simply stunning, as is the drive that will lead you to it. You can best approach Lake Garda with your rental car via the towns of Nago and Torbole, which will take you along the western banks of Riva del Garda to the town of Salo on Lake Garda. On this short passage of just 24 miles, called Gardensa Occidentale, you will pass 40 tunnels and galleries that were carved into the rocks along the road. This is a spectacular drive to experience in your rental car.
Sirmione town is known for its fairytale-like villas and churches. Old frescos, perfectly preserved arches, fortresses, and thermal springs lure flocks of tourists into this town, just like 2000 years ago, when the Romans took a baths in the healing warm waters, trying to cure problems with hearing, skin diseases and airway infections. Treat yourself to an amazing vacation by exploring Italy in a rental car.
