New Zealand belongs on top of the world and so the world map has to be turned upside down. When the “Wizard” loudly declared his demands, a small crowd of people quickly gathered around him. Once upon a time the former sociology lecturer Ian positioned himself every day at 1:00 PM on the stepladder of the stairs in the main portal of the Christchurch Cathedral and clamored to the world. Today his appearances have become rare, because Ian has been retired for several years now. However, he still haunts the minds of the people living here as the Wizard of Christchurch. With a little bit of luck, visitors to this big city in New Zealand can still attend one of his appearances.
Christchurch is located on the east coast of the southern island of New Zealand. With more than 310,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the country after Auckland. Surrounded by volcanic hills, numerous rivers and the Pacific Ocean, Christchurch is for many the most beautiful city in New Zealand. The roots of this city that is over 150 years old are clearly visible: the churches and other public buildings are built in a Gothic style and that is why Christchurch is considered to be the most British city in New Zealand.
In the center of the city is the Christ Church Cathedral. The church tower reaches nearly 217 feet into the sky. After the tip was damaged several times by earthquakes, it was decided in the beginning of the 20th century that a more flexible copper roof will be the replacement. Since then the green top of the gray stone building clearly stands out. You can climb the 133 steps to the top of the tower and on a clear day the Southern Alps can be seen on the horizon.
The church square is surrounded by rows of cozy cafés, restaurants and unusual shops that are lined up next to each other. Those that can do without a chair and table can enjoy eating in one of the many public parks and gardens. In the botanical gardens you can take a boat tour along the River Avon.
