Braganca is a university town in the north-east of Portugal in the Trás-os-Montes region, which translates into “behind the mountains”. The countryside is rough, romantic, and mystical and most likely first settled in the Stone Age, visited by Celts in the Bronze age and then the Romans, all leaving their traces.
The soil is rather infertile, but you will encounter sheep herds in the green hills that resemble the Scottish highlands. The south-western area of Trás-os-Montes is covered in vineyards, the mild climate enabling farmers to produce some of the best wine in the country.
Two great national parks that have preserved original vegetation and a rich wildlife await the visitors, and a friendly hospitality grounded in tradition and beautiful scenery make it very easy to enjoy oneself. In order to save you from any worries on-site, make sure you book your rental car in Braganca well in advance.

Braganca is encircled by a mostly intact medieval town wall, interspersed with defense towers, taking you back to long-lost times.
The mighty 12th century castle in the town center just increases that sense of the Middle Ages that you get in the whole town, and it offers a great view of the countryside. See if you can get a glimpse of the ghost of a tragic woman that supposedly resides in the Princess Tower, Torre da Princesa.
Other points of interest are the former Jewish district and the heavily decorated churches of Sao Bento and Sao Vicente. Information on the history of Braganca is playfully presented in the Museu Abade de Bacal, illustrated with historical and folkloristic exhibits. The museum comes with a beautiful garden that is perfect for a short break and a picnic. Do not forget to rent your rental car in Braganca before leaving on vacation.

Once you have explored the town, rent a car and take a trip into the country. The Parque Natural de Montesinho just outside the town offers hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding in the wild, where you will find yourselves accompanied by rare species like wolves and golden eagles.
If you’d like to spend a night outside Braganca, try the medieval villages of Franca or Montesinho. Enjoy this gorgeous landscape while driving your car rental in Braganca.

Further south along the Spanish border you will find Miranda do Douro, a picturesque, old town in a gorge of the river Douro. Renaissance buildings, a cathedral and castle ruins make this village well-known, as well as the paulistas who perform a traditional stick dance that most likely stems from ancient Celtic fertility rituals. On August 15th, Assumption Day, the paulistas dance alongside grotesque dolls and other colorful performers, mixing pagan and Christian rituals. With a car rental in Braganca, enjoy your newly found freedom.

Following the Duoro River in south-western direction, you cross a peaceful river landscape sprinkled with castles and other historic sites. In Mogadouro a vivid little market offers locally produced crafts out of which you can pick the perfect souvenir.
The medieval Old Town of Torre de Moncorvo offers plenty of opportunity for a traditional lunch of regional delicacies that wash down easily with a glass of port.
