Ferrol is a small Spanish harbor town with unique charm, located in Coruña province in the northwestern Galicia region. Though it has a relatively small population of just 75,000, Ferrol is the major military sea port on the Spanish Atlantic coast. This port, as well as the fortresses of San Felipe and La Palma make up Ferrol’s application to be admitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Both fortresses are within easy reach by rental car.
Ferrol is a surprisingly diverse town. The modern part of town is contrasted in the relics of its past as a fishing village. The old part of town, where you will find some charming, old buildings, is called Ferrol Viejo. La Magdalena, the new part of town, offers plenty of shopping and other entertainment facilities. Ferrol is also closely linked to La Coruña, just 30 miles away and an easy day trip by rental car.
Every year in March or April, around Good Friday, the Holy Week celebrations attract thousands of visitors and locals alike. This is a great way to get a good glimpse of Spanish traditions and folklore, from dress to dance, from food to music. Since the weather is mild all year round, traveling through the spring months is no problem at all.
One of the fundamental elements of any Spanish vacation is the beach. Not far from Ferrol you will find a few good beaches, e.g. Playa de Domiños and Playa de San Xorxe, where you have a choice of simply roasting in the sun or show off your skills on the board. There are a number of diving clubs that offer lessons in snorkeling and scuba diving; rates and times are available directly from the clubs.
A special highlight during your visit to Ferrol should be a walk through the Herrera Gardens, where you will find an exceptional number of exotic flowers and trees. If you wish to seek some cool shade, the military church of San Francisco will definitely provide you with it. Built in the 18th century it is a great example of neo classicist architecture and a fitting setting for the magnificent main altar, a work of art by sculptor José Ferreiro.
Once you have explored Ferrol to its fullest, a boat trip around the bay area is a perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon. Most tourist boats will take you along the coast to the San Felipe fortress from the 16th century, and the pictures you can take from the boat will be among your best holiday snapshots.
Back on land do not forget to sample some of the terrific regional cuisine. Though you will find the occasional international fast food chain, most restaurants in Ferrol specialize in local fare, which favors fresh fish from the sea as well as excellent locally produced wine.
