The mountains offer perfect winter sports conditions, allowing you to show off your skills on the board. In summer they turn into colorful meadows, dense forests and clear lakes, all interlinked by hiking trails.
Start your tour of Switzerland with Geneva, located along the shores of the Geneva Lake. After a boat tour on the lake you can visit the United Nations facilities or the fabulous Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Though Geneva is not by definition a large city you should spare a few days to look around.
From Geneva you can take the No.1 carriageway in your rental car in an eastern direction, taking you along the Lake Geneva shore to Lausanne. The medieval town center is filled with little shops and cafés, that serve exquisite local wines. Once you have fuelled up you can explore the extensive and diverse cultural program of Lausanne.
A highlight on any trip to Switzerland should be the Matterhorn, Cervino in Italian. This mountain peak is uniquely shaped like a pyramid and the most popular Swiss peak to climb. If you are not up to the hike you can take a cable car taking you up. Drive to the little town of Zermatt, a 2.5 hour drive (100 miles) from Lausanne; this is also where the cable car leaves from, which takes you from Zermatt up to an altitude of 10170 ft. in just 30 minutes. It is well worth your time, the view from up above, overlooking not just the village, but a number of other peaks, is simply breathtaking.
You can reach Zermatt by following the E62 road from Lausanne to the east until you reach Visp. There turn south onto the valley road which takes you directly to Zermatt.
To get to Silvaplana take your rental car from Zermatt to Vist and there turn right onto carriageway 19, which you follow until you get to the A13 highway. Follow this south and take exit number 22 to Tiefencastel. There turn onto carriageway 3 heading south until you reach Silvaplana.
