Flagstaff is often referred to as a gateway to the Grand Canyon!

The city is located in the state of Arizona and has around 60,000 residents. It is a popular winter sport resort, but on top of that, the proximity to the Grand Canyon, many natural wonders like volcano and meteor craters, other canyons and the legendary Route 66 make the city a popular tourist destination!

The name Flagstaff comes from a former flagpole, that settlers setup in order to celebrate the American Independence Day. They looked for a mast so that they can put up their flag and shortly thereafter a tree was cut down and the flag was raised!

Flagstaff itself has a lot to offer. Here, for example, is where the Lowell Observatory is located, which was founded in 1894. In the observatory and research center the first proof that the universe is never-ending was discovered and in 1930 the former planet Pluto was discovered.  Visitors that come here can see exhibitions, go for tours and watch the stars at night.

Sport fans will enjoy themselves in Flagstaff! Many campers, rock climbers and mountain bikers come here in order to take advantage of all the opportunities to participate in outdoor sports. Sporting events, such as triathlons, cycling races and ski races, take place here on a regular basis.

The Museum of Northern Arizona is a must to visit for all fans of natural history. Here the natural history of Arizona is presented. The exhibitions on biology, anthropology, geology and art include nearly 5,000 objects. Prehistoric ethnic finds, such as sandals, ceramics and hunting tools of the natives can be seen, as well as insects, birds, reptiles, fish and mammals of the region. Furthermore, an original replica of a Hopi kiva can be seen. This is a ceremonial and meeting place of the Hopi Indian tribe, which even today still resides in Arizona. Every year in July the Hopi Festival is celebrated, where visitors are presented with the art, culture and language of the people.

The legendary old Route 66 that once went from Chicago to Los Angeles runs through Flagstaff and because of the good connection the tourism increased. Today, however, only parts of the original have remained intact. Every other weekend in September the Route 66 Days takes place. It is a tribute to the historical road complete with live music, parades and car shows.

Another museum worth taking a trip to is the Pioneer Museum. Here visitors can experience the early pioneering days of Flagstaff. You can see farm equipment, costumes, medical instruments, household items, toys, photos and even a locomotive and railway wagon!

If you have a car then you can drive to one of the nearby attractions, such as the Walnut Canyon, the Sunset Crater (volcano crater), the Barringer Crater (meteor crater) or of course to the Grand Canyon National Park which is located 75 miles to the north. North of Flagstaff is the San Francisco Peaks, the highest mountain chain in Arizona and in the ski resort Arizona Snowbowl you can go skiing throughout the year.

With its breathtaking scenery, Flagstaff was a scene in many movies. Some of the running scenes of Forrest Gump were filmed in the area, during the 40s and 50s many Western films were made here and even a scene from Casablanca took place in the famous Monte Vista hotel in Flagstaff, where Hollywood stars used to stay.
