With 312 days of sunshine and spring-like temperatures in the wintertime, Phoenix is already tempting just because of the climate. Nearly 1.5 million people live on this metropolitan area and that is enough to make Phoenix the fifth largest city in the United States. It is also the capital city of Arizona. Located in the „Valley of the Sun“ in the Sonora desert, the city is the centrall point of this dry state that is famous for its 32 foot tall Saguaro Cactus – something that you just have to take a picture of! You can’t miss the chance to go on a guided bicycle tour through the mountains, take a ride in a hot air balloon and see the breathtaking landscape from above or to take part in popular sports like golf, tennis or horseback riding. Phoenix also has a lot to offer in regards to culture, with its elegant ambience and delightful old town. At the Desert Botanical Museum and the adjacent Phoenix Zoo you can become familiar with local flora and fauna. To learn more about the history of the region, visit the Heard Museum, where you can get a look at the art and culture of the native people. You can expect to see a unique landscape all around Phoenix. On all sides it is surrounded by mountains and it is cut through by the Salt River which offers the city and region a number of sights to see. First up would be the „Mystery Castle” at the edge of the South Mountains. This curiosity was created in 1945 by the crazy artist Luther Boyce Gulley and is made of bottles, stones and pieces of garbage. Every year it attracts many visitors. If you’re more interested in architecture then you should visit the winter home and studio of the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It is located in Scottsdale which is a suburb of Phoenix. Here you will also find Rawhide, a reproduction of a Western cowboy city and a shopper’s paradise. In Rawhide you can buy perfect souvenirs for those that stayed home and in eat a hearty southwestern meal in one of the many restaurants. Next stop is the South Mountain Park. This park offers, just like the many other nature parks in the area, one of the most beautiful views of the desert landscape all around Phoenix. Take advantage of the opportunity to experience Arizona’s great outdoors firsthand. Those that would rather follow in the footsteps of the Indians can do so in the old coal town Goldfield. At the end of the old Apache Trail and about 32 miles east of Phoenix, it is the former headquarters of the “Lost Dutchman” gold mine and that it is restored it is a popular tourist destination. Train rides, tours through the mine and gun battles provide fun for the whole family.All of these excursions are easily reached within an hour’s car drive of Phoenix. This is mainly due to the well-developed infrastructure around the capital city. A highway loop and several city highways enable you to reach your destination without any problems. This is one of the city’s many advantages. Even though the region is a large, rambling area with lots of sights to see, with a car (preferably jeep) you can easily travel from place to place and along the way see one of the prettiest regions in the southwestern part of the United States. You will surely learn to love the area. The best times to travel here are late autumn and the spring, because that is when you will avoid the hot temperatures and the many tourists that come in the wintertime.
