Tucson is located in the state of Arizona in the United States. It is the largest city in the southern part of the state having a metropolitan area population of nearly a million. In 1700 the missionary Eusebio Kino founded the first Spanish mission station in the area of the Pima, Tohono and O´odham Indian tribes. The city is characterized by the unique restored old town district of El Presidio which attracts many tourists from around the world each year.
Tucson is surrounded by several cactus forests like the one found in the Saguaro National Park. The ancient cacti can reach a height of almost 50 feet and will be in bloom during the month of May. This one of a kind landscape can be explored on one of the many nature trails or streets. Ideally you will travel by car, since this is how you can really take in the breathtaking desert landscape.
Another famous attraction is the “Old Tucson Studios“. Although this famous movie city was partially burnt down in 1995, there are still stunt shows that take place daily between 9 AM and 6 PM on the reconstructed stage and which fascinate the visitors. The most beautiful mission church in the southwestern part of the United States is also found in Tucson. The “Mission San Xavier del Bac” was built in 1797 and is definitely worth visiting. It is only a little more than 9 miles away from downtown Tucson and can easily be reached by car by driving along the San Xavier Road.
Even those that love culture can find something here. The city is home to several symphony orchestras and visitors can choose between three different theaters and many museums. Going to the cabaret “Laff´s Comedy Club” is also something worth doing. Especially famous are the “Arizona State Museum” and the “Arizona- Sonora Desert Museum”. The “Arizona State Museum” displays a unique collection of archeological items from the southwestern region of the USA, whereas the “Arizona- Sonora Desert Museum” is an outdoor museum and an absolute highlight of any trip to this part of the US. It is located in the “Tucson Mountain Park” and is easy to reach with a car. It is both a zoo and a botanical garden where visitors can marvel at the fascinating desert under the open sky. You get an impressive view of the unique landscape formations of the American desert here.
Since Tucson is also a well known university town, the nightlife of this city is influenced by students and is vibrant. The 4th Avenue is considered to be the bar mile of Tucson, whereas somewhat more high classed bars and taverns can be found, for example, in the La Encantada Shopping Mall.
A special tip is the annual international film festival which attracts film fans from near and far to the city every April. The “Tucson Rodeo Parade” which has taken place here since 1925 is also world famous. The parade which now has more than 700 participants gives the visitors a spectacular rodeo experience and a chance to get up close and personal with cowboys! Another popular festival is the “Tucson Folk Festival” which always takes place during the first week of May. The visitors can take an active part here and can, for example, participate in the gospel workshops. A broad spectrum of regional music and art is presented and surely through that a special insight into the exciting culture of Tucson, Arizona.
