Car rental California - awesome!

The most populous state in the U.S. stands for trends, celebrities and lifestyle. On the West Coast however, there is a lot more to discover than just Hollywood. Here you will find natural beauty alongside theme parks, mega cities and huge Indian reservations.

Best time to visit California in your rental car

To learn about California in all its diversity, take a tour with a rental car from San Francisco to Los Angeles along the coast. Highway 1 is known as the dream of America and has fantastic views all along the coast. You should plan the ‘most beautiful panoramic tour’ of the West Coast for April to June or September to October, because in the summer the West Coast is often blanketed in fog. For the 600 mile route you should allow approx four to five days and stay over in San Francisco and Los Angeles for at least three days.

Golden Gate Bridge viewed from a rental car

In San Francisco you can expect bohemian, hippie-memories. Leave the rental car behind and go with the cable car, the 100-year-old tram, on a discovery tour through this enchanting city. Other musts for tourists include the new Asian Art Museum in Downtown, Chinatown with its fine restaurants and the Golden Gate Park resting below the world famous landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge. The young scene in the city meets in SoMa, in the center of the city, where there is also the Museum of Modern Art and the Metreon entertainment complex.

Coast along Highway 1 in California with car rental

Take the Highway US-101 south to Silicon Valley and in San José you will learn all about the legendary high-tech center and go into the world of bits and bytes. Then go 2,000 years back in time and 100 meters high to redwood groves onto Santa Cruz. This colorful town, with its surfers, students and beach villas is typical of California. Along Highway 1 are the interesting stops one after another. In Monterey, you should pay a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, or stroll in Caramel by the beautiful old coastal town and at Point Lobos State Reserve sea lions and sea otters can be observed. Then go deeper into the heart of the Pacific Coast Highway 1. Up on high cliffs, the trail curves along the relatively undiscovered coast to San Simeon - take some time out for a beach walk, look at the shells and watch the surfers. At the traditional surf beaches Refugio and El Capitan, you will encounter many veterans of this ‘scene’. At the foot of the Santa Ynez Mountains, you will see one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the state, Santa Barbara, with its secluded Mediterranean influenced architecture.

LA is just around the corner

To LA, it is still a good three hours along Highway 1 all the way along the coast where you can check out some of the current surfing hotspots in the world: Malibu, Zuma Beach or Venice Beach. Get out, join in or just sit and watch - you will definitely have fun anyway!

Take your rental car onto the red carpet in Hollywood!

And then you're right there in the thick of Los Angeles, in the largest city of the Golden State where the celebrities are at home. For a tour of Beverly Hills and Santa Monica you can buy street maps with addresses and the stars, visit the ‘modest’ palaces of the Beckhams and Di Caprio, and watch Schwarzenegger and friends close up. If that is not enough celebrity flair, you should take a walk along the stars of Hollywood Boulevard (Walk of Fame) and see the hand imprints in front of the Chinese Theatre. Next door you will find the Kodak Theatre, where the Academy Awards traditionally takes place. Behind the scenes of the world's largest film industry, you can look at Universal studios. Here you can go shoulder to shoulder with the white shark, the mummy, Buffy or Shrek.

So, California? Here we come!
