Up and Down in San Francisco

Tourists that want to explore San Francisco on foot will need to be in good condition. The Californian city on the west coast of the United States has more than 40 hills. There is also a convenient alternative which is also a symbol of the city. With the three lines of the legendary cable car you can get quickly from one sight to see to the next. Since the cable cars are often crowded, it is best to get on at one of the first stops.

The houses in San Francisco are just as extraordinary as the cable cars.  In many places there are still old, Victorian houses from the gold rush in the 19th century. Some of the most beautiful of them are located along the side of the park in Alamo Square. The „Painted Ladies“ are restored, colorfully painted wooden houses with elaborately decorated gables which were at one time home to bars and bordells. Today they belong to the row of houses in front of the skyline of the business district, which is one of the most photographed areas of the city.

A similarly well known view is a steep part of Lombard Street. While most of the streets are typically American, laid out like a chess board and are straight, this street winds like a snake down Russian Hill, embedded in colorful flower beds and lines with impressive villas. Every that has a car should drive down this narrow street at least once, however, only downhill since it is a one-way street.

Those starting off in the northern part of San Francisco can get to the city by going over the most famous suspension bridge in the world, the Golden Gate Bridge. It spans the opening to the San Francisco Bay. Over 1.7 miles you will have a fantastic view of the San Francisco skyline, the bay and the famous island of Alcatraz.  That is, if the weather plays along, since in the afternoon hours a thick fog often travels from the sea into the bay.  While the weather downtown is still suitable for a T-shirt, the coastal areas can be up to 12 degrees cooler. Therefore you should always have a sweater with you.

The entertainment center of the city is Fisherman’s Wharf, but fishing is something that hasn’t been done for a long time here.  A large amusement park, countless bars, cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops provide visitors with unlimited things to do. The sea lions are something special to see. Every day they lay around Pier 39 and soak in the sun, something that visitors enjoy seeing.

On the neighboring piers, from 41 to 43, is where the excursion boats leave for the nearby islands in the bay. A absolute must do for every tourist is a trip to the Alcatraz, the jail on the islands. Until 1963 the most dangerous criminals in the USA were jailed here. Today visitors can tour the jail and even experience being locked up in one of the cells.
