Nashville is conveniently located at the southern end of the Appalachians and on the Cumberland River. The capital city of Tennessee has around 511,000 residents. After Memphis, Nashville is the most densely populated city in the state. Nashville owes its name to James Robertson. He and a few settlers on the Cumberland River founded Fort Nashborough in the year 1779, which he named after a hero of the Revolutionary War.
In Nashville there is a whole lot to see. If you want to see all the country stars at the same time, for example, then you have to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum at 401 Demonbreun Street. This house pays tribute to all of the stars of country music and their history. The facility exists since 1961 and every floor is dedicated to a time period. You can see videos and listen to samples of songs, as well as see mementos of the stars. The Country Music Hall is open daily from 8 AM – 7 PM in June to August, otherwise from 9 AM – 5 PM.
Right across the street at 116 5th Avenue is the Ryman Auditorium. The place has excellent acoustics and is therefore used for shows and concerts of all musical styles. The Ryman Auditorium is open daily from 8:30 AM – 4 PM.
You can really enjoy shopping in the Historic Market Street district. To get there you have to drive to 2nd Avenue. There you will find Victorian warehouses that contain businesses, bars and restaurants.
If you want to, then you can go for a walk along the Cumberland River, heading towards Riverfront Park. Not only is the new football stadium there, but also a reconstruction of the original Fort Nashborough on a scale of 1:4. Admission is daily from 9 AM – 5 PM.
You have to go to Opryland, approx. 9 miles northeast of Nashville. From the concert hall of the Grand Ole Opry the radio show with the same name is broadcasted. Often guests are the stars of the country music scene. You can also visit the Country Star Wax Figure Cabinet in the Gran Ole Opry museum, daily from 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM. In Opryland there is one of the largest outlet centers in the country. In a number of stores there are a lot of brand names that you can get cheaper directly from the manufacturer.
Everyone that loves mansions has to take a trip to the residence of Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the USA. The Hermitage is loacted to the east of Nashville. The house is built in the Federal Style and it dates back to 1821. The house is open daily from 9 AM – 5 PM.
If you want to stay overnight in Nashville, then you have to spend the night in the Opryland Hotel. The hotel has 3 stars, a huge glass dome over the inner courtyard, gardens with tropical plants, different plays with water and a waterfall. Of course there are also many cafés, bars and restaurants.
The nightlife of Nashville can be enjoyed at many places, but especially in the Wildhorse Saloon on 12th Avenue. The dance club is considered legendary and attracts many guests. On weekends there are lessons in square dancing. So, enjoy your stay!
